Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
Silly thread maybe but i'm just curious...
Anybody know how long the Carnation Powdered Milk will last if stored in a cool, dry pantry? It comes packaged in big 'ol cardboard boxes that don't seem particularly airtight. I remember drinking the stuff as a kid and not being too fond of it but we have 3 kids and one more on the way so we're trying to cut back on all the milk we drink. We'd been buying organic all along but that stuff is so expensive. We were drinking organic after hearing about all the BGH, antibiotics, and pharmaceuticals they pump in dairy cows. As far as taste... it ain't the best but i don't notice a difference at all with cereal. Pulled the 'ol switcheroo on the kids tonight at dinner and they didn't even notice. Does anyone know if the powdered milk is any worse/better for you? |

Now - seeing as it tastes pretty crappy at high quality levels - I suspect you could stretch it 3 years without noticing how much crappier it tastes! :haha: |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
:haha:
With the cost savings, i can learn to like crappy. Btw.. The stuff i'm drinking is about 2 years old now. Thanks for the info ... |

Mine was three years old - and it didn't kill me! Or maybe it did!?! :hmmmm: |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
TJT,
Instead of purchasing 'ORGANIC' milk, find your local dairy delivery guy. Most towns STILL have at least one company that delivers milk to your doorstep. Cheap, no. Expensive, no. About average. Here in Denver, we use Royal Crest dairy. They deliver us five half gallons (two the first part of the week, three the last part of the week). They use ZERO preservatives. As a matter of fact, 24 hours before it was delivered, IT WAS STILL IN THE COW. My neighbor is in charge of the milk/dairy case for a Kroger owed grocery store. He says the milk you get from the local grocer can be as new as one week old and as OLD as three weeks old WHEN YOU PURCHASE IT. So, which would YOU rather drink? One day old milk with no preservatives? Or three week old milk just chock full of preservatives? The wife says her nails have gotten a lot stronger/better since we switched. And the 1% milk tastes better than the 2% milk we were buying from the grocery store. I WILL NEVER GO BACK. |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
It's warm here so it goes downhill sooner, but 1 year is fine. It makes good yogurt too.
My opinion is that it is not nearly as healthy as milk that has not been processed so much. (Plus the chemicals you mentioned.) But not deadly or anything. And as yogurt is has been livened up with other health benefits. (We even like the yogurt on cereal.) Oh! Our coop sells cleaner dry milk.. yours might too if you have one locally. Our delivery dairy stopped and sold out and that was a minor local tragedy. That was great milk. Now we get the Whole Foods milk which is good, but not as good as that really fresh stuff. |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
I think its printed as 2 years on the can. You can almost always keep stuff longer than what is printed, its just they can't guarantee it after so long. I would say it will probably last 5 years, it may even last longer though it might be questionable.

Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
It never even dawned on me to check our local delivery guy. I just assumed that delivery-to-the-door was a thing of the past. Like diaper service (which we're also investigating going back to clothe diapers but heard mixed reviews on that one too.) I'll check that out... thanks!
Alric ... i tend to agree with you. I found a can of Vienna sausages that was 10 years old while purging old camping gear... popped it open and it looked as nutritious, natural, and fresh as the day they first grew them and canned 'em. :clap2: |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
I don't know how this compares to the price you are paying for Carnation, but they designed it for tasting good to drink and long shelf life.
http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/ind...ROD&ProdID=302 They say it wins the blind taste test of all dried milk types, and they rate it at a much longer storage life. They have very inexpensive shipping too. I have not tried it, but I have been well satisfied with other things I ordered from them. |

By the way, the reconstituted dry milk tastes much better after sitting in the refrigerator overnight and even better if you mix it half-and-half with fresh milk out of the bottle. |

When we had twins last year... went through '99-'02 stash for nite-time, and travel bottles. They did not mind.... I taste tested each box just to make sure....:smokin:

Along with Merlin's suggestion to let it sit in 'fridge overnight, i also think it tastes better in a glass container rather than a plastic jug or pitcher. Just my 2 cents... Shoot ... even if the stuff only keeps for 1 year, it's still worth it to me. |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
I hate to rain on the parade but milk is for baby cows, not humans.
In addition: "Dairy products are a health hazard. They contain no fiber or complex carbohydrates and are laden with saturated fat and cholesterol. They are contaminated with cow's blood and pus and are frequently contaminated with pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Dairy products are linked to allergies, constipation, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and other diseases..." Continued at: http://www.milksucks.com/index2.asp BOTTOM LINE: Nobody needs milk but everyone needs pure water. So do yourselves a favor and put your money into the purest drinking water you can find. Pure water is something that actually benefits the health. :cheerful: |

But after reading all the things that the bible has to say about milk i'm not gonna worry about it. There are a gazillion verses extolling the virtues of milk. Look at all the places that refer to a "a land that floweth with MILK and honey." And those verses are not talking about human breast milk either. I know i'll get slapped around for this but i believe the bible is correct in ALL matters. So if God says milk is good for ya, then who am I to ignore the counsel of God. Now as far as the hormones, chemicals, preservatives, drugs, anti-biotics, etc.... I'm with ya all the way!!! Btw... I'm using pure water to make my milk. Are you ok with that? |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
Goat milk, structurally, is closer to human milk and more nutritious. The taste is somewhat objectionable, but in tough times. . . . I got the following info off of www.meyenberg.com. They have canned powdered goat milk. The fatty acid and protein structure of goat milk is different than cow milk, and it is much easier to digest. Goat milk contains only trace amounts of the cow milk protein that some people are allergic to. Many people who are diagnosed as lactose intolerant can drink goat milk. Goat milk products contain no preservatives, are free of antibiotics and Bovine Growth Hormones (rBGH/BST), and are certified kosher. |

If you must IMHO, then consume goat milk, there is nothing at all in milk that gives one any nutrition in any way, in fact it will cause a decrease in calcium. If you read not milk.com, that is the tip of the ice berg. |

LOL. Yeah, like I said, it does have an objectionable taste-- you have a more colorful way of saying it. I think if you're expecting the mellow/mild taste of cow milk and swig the goat milk you're going to be majorly disappointed. It has the same taste as fetta (goat cheese) and if you're expecting that fetta taste-- it can become an aqcuired taste. I don't drink it straight, I make yogurt out of goat milk so maybe that helps the taste. PS I was just trying to put out another option, not a practical joke to get your family "wretching" all over each other-- LOL. |

I just love milk. What can I say? The only thing i love more than plain Milk is that Carnation Chocolate Malt Mix with milk. And i can't find that anywhere anymore. I'm with you 100% on the factory farming and chemical crap. I can't argue you with at all. Have a great weekend! :coolbeer: |
Re: Carnation Dry Milk. What do you think?
Now you are going to make me jump in here and defend my goats' honor! I'm sure the canned or dried stuff tastes bad but there is NO reason for fresh goat's milk to taste much different than cow milk. The varying amount of fat can make a difference. We have Nubians, Saanens, and Toggs and the wife thinks the Nubian milk is basically the exact same taste as good cow's milk.
If you get some goat milk and it tastes bad, ask some questions. How old is it? Was it chilled right after it was milked out? What have the does been eating? (Some really stinky weeds will go right to the milk taste.) Are the does in with a smelly buck who is rubbing on them and leaving his smell? I would sell extra goat milk to a neighbor but I'm not willing to milk enough to actually have any real income coming in. Gregg |
